There are lots of different game modes, which is both a curse and a blessing.
This maneuver takes some getting use to, but it is essential in mastering the gameplay. But if you need to grab onto a ledge, then you have to release A and press it again while holding the UP arrow. For example, to jump, you would press the jump button. Play for about a minute and you'll quickly find out that they've doubled up button functionality. Overall the difficulty of this game isn't very high, though it is challenging because of the awkward controls. At one point I even had to change characters while jumping.
The gameplay is rather bizarre, as you are constantly switching between Barney and Fred in an attempt to reach the end of the level. However, that's where the nice things end. The graphics are quite good considering the hardware capabilities. The answer is, unless you're a die hard collector like myself, probably not. That, coupled with the late release of the title makes this one of the rarest officially released cartridges. There are a good variety of levels in the game and some of them are actually quite challenging (I can't tell you how many times I fell in the haunted house where you have to do multiple climbs with Fred!)Īs many collectors know, this gem was only released to the rental market. You can store one item in your inventory- many of these items being weapons. Each character has his own unique abilities- Fred has the power to charge his cl ub and climb up rocks while Barney has the power to climb ropes and shoot a slingshot. The game allows you to switch between Fred and Barn at any time which is truly remarkable for a NES game.
The game regularly sells for over 150 dollars on Ebay- and a complete in box copy would likely fetch upward of 750 dollars! Protip: If you can find this game at a garage sale you've struck gold! :)īut aside from being a collector's item, the game shines in term of being a unique and challenging platformer. Released in 1994 as a rental only game through Blockbuster Video, Flintstones 2 is among the rarest and most expensive NES titles- and quite the collectible in NES circles. As one of the last games released for the NES, Flintstones 2 took the 8-bit system to its limits.
